What exactly is vRack and how does it replace NSX?

Accepted Answer

vRack is OVH's private VLAN network that connects your servers across locations. You create a vRack, add servers, and they communicate over a private 10-25 Gbit/s network – without routing through the public internet. This replaces NSX for: cross-site VM communication, private VLANs, cluster traffic. For micro-segmentation, additionally use Proxmox SDN. vRack is included free – NSX costs thousands per year.

We use OVH Hosted Private Cloud – how do we migrate to Dedicated + Proxmox?

This is one of the fastest migration paths! Your Hosted Private Cloud servers and Dedicated servers can be in the same vRack. You can migrate VMs directly over the internal network – no upload/download via the internet needed. Typical workflow: 1) Provision Dedicated servers in vRack, 2) Install Proxmox, 3) Migrate VMs over vRack connection, 4) Cancel Hosted Private Cloud. Migration speed: 10-25 Gbit/s internally.

How do Failover IPs work with Proxmox?

Accepted Answer

Failover IPs are public IPs that you can move between OVH servers (even across locations). Perfect for HA scenarios: the IP points to the active node, on failover you move the IP to the backup node. In Proxmox, configure the Failover IP as an additional IP on the bridge interface. On cluster failover, Proxmox HA automatically updates IP assignment via API script. So you have floating IPs without a load balancer.

Which OVH server lines do you recommend for Proxmox?

Accepted Answer

For production: Advance-2 or Scale line – good balance of CPU, RAM, and NVMe. For storage/Ceph: High Grade with many disk slots or Storage servers (So you Start). For small environments: Rise-1 as an affordable entry. Our recommendation for typical VMware migration: 3x Advance-2 (Intel Xeon, 128GB RAM, 2x 960GB NVMe) for about €450/month total. This often replaces VMware licenses worth €5,000+/year.

How good is OVH's DDoS protection really?

Accepted Answer

OVH operates one of the largest Anti-DDoS networks worldwide (VAC). Protection capacity is several Tbit/s. For gaming servers and critical applications, there's Anti-DDoS Game with even finer filtering. The special thing: protection is automatically active and included free. At other providers (AWS Shield, Cloudflare) you quickly pay €3,000+/month for comparable protection. For companies regularly under attack, this is a decisive advantage.

How do I replace vSAN at OVH – what storage options?

Accepted Answer

Two main options: 1) Ceph on High-Scale or Storage servers – OVH offers servers with up to 36 disk slots, ideal for Ceph. Distributed storage across 3+ nodes like vSAN. 2) ZFS with Proxmox replication for smaller clusters – easier to manage, uses NVMe disks in each server. For off-site backup: OVH Object Storage (S3-compatible) or Storage server in vRack at another location for geo-replication.

Which OVH locations do you recommend for GDPR compliance?

Accepted Answer

For maximum GDPR security: Limburg (DE) or Strasbourg (FR). Both locations are in the EU, OVH is a European company without Cloud Act risk. For geo-redundancy within the EU: combination of Limburg + Strasbourg connected via vRack. OVH is ISO 27001, BSI C5, and SOC 1/2/3 certified. For customers with customers in other regions: additional edge servers in Canada, UK, or Singapore possible.

How do I back up my Proxmox VMs at OVH?

Accepted Answer

Several options: 1) Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) locally + sync to OVH Object Storage (S3). 2) Storage server in vRack at another location as backup target. 3) Veeam with OVH Object Storage backend. Our recommendation: PBS on one of the Proxmox nodes, daily backups to NVMe, then nightly sync to Object Storage in another OVH DC. This gives you fast local restores + geo-redundancy.

Do I need an additional firewall at OVH?

Accepted Answer

OVH offers an edge firewall in the control panel – good for basic rules. For enterprise requirements, we recommend an OPNsense cluster on Proxmox. OPNsense offers: stateful inspection, IDS/IPS (Suricata), VPN (WireGuard, IPsec, OpenVPN), traffic shaping, and detailed logging. The cluster runs as a VM pair with Failover IP for HA. Cost: €0 licenses, just resources for 2 small VMs.

How does OVH support differ from OutaCloud support?

Accepted Answer

OVH support handles hardware issues and network infrastructure. For broken disks, network outages, or server problems, they're responsible. OutaCloud handles everything above the hardware: Proxmox configuration, VM management, backup strategy, performance optimization, OS-level troubleshooting. With Managed Operations, you have one contact for everything – we also coordinate with OVH when needed.

What about Windows licenses at OVH?

OVH offers SPLA Windows licenses that you can book monthly. Alternatively: BYOL (Bring Your Own License) with your existing licenses – easier with Dedicated servers than cloud instances.
