How does OVHcloud achieve cost savings compared to AWS?

With AWS, you pay for abstraction and flexibility in the form of vCPU hours. With OVHcloud, we use dedicated bare-metal servers where you get full physical computing power at a fixed price. Combined with the elimination of egress fees for traffic, costs for compute-intensive workloads often drop by over 75 percent.

Are there hidden fees for data transfer at OVHcloud?

Accepted Answer

No. One of the biggest advantages of OVHcloud over AWS is the unlimited traffic model in most regions. While AWS charges for every gigabyte of outbound traffic, OVHcloud servers include bandwidth of often 1 Gbit/s or more in the monthly fixed price.

Does my infrastructure remain in my ownership?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Unlike the proprietary AWS ecosystem, we rent the hardware in your name or you bring your own OVHcloud account. By using Proxmox VE as the virtualization layer, you avoid any vendor lock-in. You could theoretically move to another provider at any time with your VM images.

Which AWS components are typically migrated?

Accepted Answer

We primarily migrate EC2 instances to Proxmox VMs or LXC containers, RDS databases to high-performance database setups directly on bare-metal, EBS volumes to local NVMe storage or Ceph clusters, and S3 buckets to OVHcloud Object Storage, which is S3-compatible.

How is AWS VPC replaced at OVHcloud?

Accepted Answer

We use OVHcloud vRack. This is a private Layer 2 network that isolates your servers without routing traffic over the public internet. Within Proxmox, we configure VLANs over vRack to map exactly the security zones you are accustomed to from your AWS VPC.

How do we replace AWS RDS (Managed Databases)?

Accepted Answer

We set up dedicated database instances on the Proxmox hosts. Through direct access to NVMe datacenter SSDs at OVHcloud, we often achieve significantly better latencies and IOPS values than RDS. Backups and monitoring are handled as part of our Managed Ops.

What happens to my S3 data?

Accepted Answer

OVHcloud offers a powerful S3-compatible Object Storage. We migrate your data via rclone or similar tools. Since the API is compatible, you usually only need to change the endpoint and credentials in your application.

Can AWS Lambda (serverless) functions be migrated?

Accepted Answer

Serverless functions usually require refactoring. We often recommend moving to lightweight LXC containers or a KNative setup on Kubernetes within your Proxmox cluster. This is often more cost-effective when the functions are called regularly.

Does OVHcloud offer protection against DDoS attacks like AWS Shield?

Accepted Answer

Yes, OVHcloud is known for its enterprise-grade anti-DDoS protection, which is included in every server at no extra cost. It filters attacks directly at the OVH network entry point before they reach your Proxmox host.

Is the setup automatically High Availability (HA)?

Accepted Answer

We offer two approaches. First, single-node, which is cost-effective and similar to a single EC2 instance without a load balancer. Second, HA cluster, where we use at least three nodes and vRack to build a Proxmox cluster with automatic failover. If a server fails, VMs automatically restart on another node.

How are backups implemented at OVHcloud?

We use Proxmox Backup Server (PBS). Backups are encrypted and deduplicated and transferred to separate storage such as OVHcloud Storage Box or Backup Storage. This enables extremely fast recovery times (RTO).

Why is OVHcloud safer for EU companies than AWS?

Accepted Answer

OVHcloud is a French company and is not subject to the US Cloud Act. Your data resides in European data centers such as Limburg in Germany or Gravelines in France and is thus maximally protected from access by third countries.

Is the migration a lift & shift or is refactoring needed?

Accepted Answer

Our focus is on lift & shift. We convert your AWS AMIs directly to Proxmox-compatible formats. This means your application continues to run exactly as before, just on more performant bare-metal hardware. Expensive software rewrites are not necessary.

Can the migration happen without downtime?

Accepted Answer

For data replication, we use background syncs. Only for the final cutover with DNS switch is there a brief maintenance window to guarantee data consistency. Through clever routing via HAProxy or load balancer, we keep this time minimal.

How long does a migration from AWS to OVHcloud take?

Accepted Answer

A standard setup with 5 to 10 instances is typically migrated within 1 to 2 weeks including testing. For more complex clusters with multi-node setups, we plan approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Is a rollback possible if problems occur?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Since we only shut down AWS resources once the system is running stably on OVHcloud and has been accepted by you, we can switch back to AWS at any time via DNS. The risk to your business is zero.
