The Problem: Growing Complexity

As infrastructures grow, so does complexity. Anyone running multiple Proxmox clusters across different locations knows the challenges:

  • Lack of overview - Each cluster has its own dashboard
  • Fragmented metrics - No consolidated view of CPU, RAM, and storage
  • Manual processes - VM migrations between clusters are cumbersome
  • Increased error-proneness - Without central control, mistakes happen faster

Proxmox Datacenter Manager was developed precisely for these scaling challenges.

Key Features

Central Dashboard

All Proxmox VE clusters and Backup Server instances in one interface. The dashboard shows:

  • Global status of all connected systems
  • CPU, RAM, and storage I/O at a glance
  • Important KPIs and performance metrics
  • Offline visibility through local caching

Multi-Cluster Management

Seamless management of independent Proxmox clusters and nodes from a central location.

Cross-Cluster Live Migration

The highlight feature: VMs can be live migrated between different clusters. This enables:

  • Load balancing across locations
  • Maintenance without downtime
  • Flexible resource management

Custom Views with RBAC

Customizable dashboards with role-based access control:

  • Filtered views by remotes, resource types, or tags
  • Granular permissions without direct VM access
  • Ideal for multi-tenant environments

Inspired by Elasticsearch and GitHub - resources can be found instantly:

  • Filter by resource type (remote, VM, container)
  • Filter by status (stopped, running, etc.)
  • Custom tags
  • Works even with thousands of VMs

Centralized SDN (EVPN)

EVPN zones and VNets can be configured directly through a single interface - even when distributed across multiple remotes.

Update Management

Central overview of all available updates with direct rollout via the Datacenter Manager interface.

Technical Foundation

Proxmox Datacenter Manager is based on:

  • Debian 13.2 "Trixie"
  • Linux Kernel 6.17
  • ZFS 2.3
  • Rust with the new Proxmox UI Framework (Yew)

The Rust foundation ensures maximum performance - important when managing large environments.

Availability

Proxmox Datacenter Manager 1.0 is available for download now:

  • ISO installation on bare metal
  • APT upgrade from older versions
  • Installation on existing Debian installation

The software is open source under the GNU AGPLv3.

Important for enterprise customers: Those with active Enterprise Support for Proxmox VE or Backup Server automatically get access to updates and support for Datacenter Manager.

Conclusion

Proxmox Datacenter Manager 1.0 is an important building block for anyone running larger Proxmox infrastructures. Central management, cross-cluster migration, and the modern Rust-based interface make managing distributed environments significantly easier.
